Erik Beresnoy, LMHC
Licensed Mental Health Counselor | PhD Candidate | Virtually across NY | (He/Him)
Erik Beresnoy, LMHC, believes the stories we tell about ourselves shape how we live, and that those stories can change. He works with adults, couples, and families moving through life transitions, relationship strain, anxiety, and addiction and recovery. In his sessions, you’re treated as the expert on your own life, with room to question old beliefs, make sense of what you’ve been through, and figure out what you actually want next.
Erik has extensive training in narrative therapy, an approach that separates you from the problem you’re facing. Instead of asking what’s wrong with you, narrative therapy looks at how a problem took hold and what it has been costing you. That shift can open up new ways of seeing yourself and the people closest to you. Erik draws on other approaches as needed, and he pays close attention to how family, culture and circumstance shape the beliefs we carry. For individuals and families affected by substance use, he offers addiction and recovery support grounded in his years of advocacy in the recovery community.
Before becoming a counselor, Erik built a career in the electrical industry, so he knows firsthand what it takes to change course partway through life. Today he also teaches future counselors at Pace University, where he is a doctoral student. Whether you’re looking for couples therapy to break a painful pattern, support through a major life transition, or a therapist who understands recovery, Erik will meet you with curiosity, honesty and real respect for where you’ve been.
